Yahoo! mail beta - test drive it!

Ok, so many of you may be familiar with the Yahoo! mail beta that Yahoo! announced a long time ago. They even collected the mail id's of the people interested to test-drive it before anyone but I think no one really got it (including yours faithfully). But I came across tis secret URL that many of you wouldn't be knowing. You can test it before many. I did it.

Let me tell you that its still in BETA thats is it still has some BUGS and by some I mean many because everytime I tried accessing it all of my Firefox windows closed automatically..strange huh? Well I couldn't also figure out where to read the message because its like a window in a window. I should say they have tried to be much like Gmail but couldn't compete it...and no one can at the present!

Whatever may it be, experiences differ so you shouldn't hesitate checking it atleast..afterall you can return to your old (but good) Yahoo! mail.

Things you should know if you use Gmail

Things you should know if you use Gmail

If you are using Gmail then you might already be familiar with it's power! Gmail is the fastest e-mail service on the web..it gives superb interface and has too many features that most of the users are unaware of!

Forwarding and POP3 access

Forwarding fork brilliantly in Gmail. This service is a paid service in Yahoo! mail service whereas Gmail provides it at NO COST. Now suppose that I have 2 gmail addresses, bettertips & bettertips.blogspot and I give both the e-mails on my blog. People can send to either of the mail addresses but it would become extremely difficult for me to maintain both of them. So what I'll do is I will login to the email that I rarely use and got to Settings--Forwarding and POP3 and I'll set the forward e-mail to the one that I use most of the time. It's that simple and easy! You can also manage your from address from the Gmail inbox!!

Store Files at Gmail

Ever wondered of the untapped storage of your Gmail inbox? I am sure you might have wished you could use Gmail to store your Files and Documents. But hey, now you can! Yes, you can store your files and other documents as attachments in your Gmail. You simply need to download THIS Gmail Drive add-on software and you will find this drive in your My Computer folder.

Calendar

I don't know about you but I have started depending on this awesome tool! You can access this tool right from the Gmail inbox. You can schedule your time-table daily and also for the day. Whenever you receive some date or time or some sort of a schedule, Gmail recognises it and prompts if you want to add it to your calendar.

Spreadsheets

Google Labs have developed a cool new concept of online collaborating softwares. Although this concept might seem to be new to many of new, the very foundations of the Internet are laid on easy collaboration. Google Spreadsheets are nothing but a software like Excel but the best feature of Spreadsheets is that it is absolutely FREE and you can store it and collaborate online. You can save unlimited spreadsheets. But the storage capacity for an individual file is limited.
So don't just keep reading, enjoy Gmail and if you don't have a Gmail account just take time to drop an e-mail to me at bettertips[at]gmail[dot]com and I'll send you one!

Now I can say..... You Go(o) Gal (el) !!

Aol to provide personalised e-mail addresses

AOL (America Online) announced on 9th August of the launch of its new service called AOL® My eAddress. The service planned to be launched in September will allow anyone to set up a completely personalised .COM or .NET e-mail address (upto 100) for NO CHARGE at all!
This address will be a gateway that could be used to access any and all of the AOL services just like Google and Yahoo! currently provide. Considering the fierce competition on the web AOL has also planned to give away 5GB of FREE storage!

"AOL is about to make online communications more personal than ever before," said Roy Ben-Yoseph, Director of Communication Products, AOL. "The most popular Internet activity is email, yet many people don't have an online identity that's truly personal and meaningful to them. Starting next month, with the launch of its My eAddress service, AOL will make personalized email domains available to all online users at absolutely no cost. Not only can people customize an email address with their own personal domain and connect up to 100 other identities, giving families, teams, social organizations and small businesses a new way to represent themselves, but they'll also be able to use it for instant messaging and as a Web page address. This is an opportunity that millions of people have been waiting for, and AOL is thrilled to be the first to provide it."
AOL has planned this service as a complement to its latest AOL.com and AIM.com mail products.

Among the features that will be available with the free AOL My eAddress service:

  • -- Ability to completely customize an email address using a personalized .COM or .NET domain and identity, e.g., "you@thenameyouwant.com."
  • -- Setup, registration and the use of a My eAddress email domain and identity is all free (one domain per user), as is the ability to invite other people to join their personalized domain. Each account holder can add up to 100 additional personal email identities associated with their domain, all managed through an easy Web-based control panel.
  • -- Ability to check email from My eAddress and AOL.com domains through one mailbox accessible from the Web at www.aol.com, open mail clients (like Outlook and Thunderbird) that use the IMAP protocol, and through the new beta version of the AOL "Streamliner" product.
  • -- Industry-leading spam and anti-virus protection to help keep a user's email box free from junk mail and harmful viruses.
  • -- 2 GB of email storage, which can be accessed from any Web-enabled computer, and a search feature that makes it easy for users to find messages in their personal mailbox, sent mail, or stored mail.
  • -- An Address Book that also includes presence indication to see when contacts are online and able to receive instant messages.
  • -- Integrated access to AOL's other free Web-based products and services, including AOL® Calendar and, coming soon, AOL® Pictures, a comprehensive online digital picture service that offers free and unlimited storage of digital photos.
Now this is what I call HEALTHY COMPETITION....!

Do you own a Dell?

Dell and the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission recently reported that over 4.1 million computer batteries could explode under certain atmospheric conditions causing short-circuit or fire. So if you use one be careful and follow these to avoid such mishaps.

Do not:

  • Over charge your Laptop
  • overload the battery
  • use the PC when not in use
  • use the PC in a hot place
  • let the battery heat too much
If the battery gets heated too much the liquid inside it may ooze out and may cause short-circuit thereby causing fire or in the worst case scenario, explode!
If you follow these precautions then there's no need for you to worry. Happy (and safe) surfing!

Google sets an example by providing FREE WiFi Internet access in Mountain view, California

Google is here once again to set up an example to fellow competitors as well as give them a hard blow on their faces! Google has introduced absolutely FREE WiFi internet access to the residents of Mountain View, the heardquarters of Google.
Radios hanging on the lampposts in the city are the main devices that will become the lifeline of the city's internet access. According to Google

This network is a way for us to give back to and engage with the community where our headquarters are. As the product manager for Google WiFi, it has been has been tremendously rewarding to partner with the local government, the schools, the library, the neighborhood associations, and all of our trusted testers to introduce the power of free, wireless Internet connectivity to the city. I look forward to meeting with more members of the community at upcoming training sessions and ice cream socials :-)

Residents of Mountain View are very happy to see a welcoming change in the wireless network and are proud to have a headquarter of Google!

Google to set up a server farm in India !

The Internet Search Giant Google plans to set up a server farm in the state of Andhra Pradesh in India. This server farm will be Google's second facility of its kind in Asia. Being the second plan to set it up in India (the first plan was cancelled and was instead set up in Taiwan) Google has kept most of the plans as a secret. Google hasn't officially announced anything as of yet.

The project reported at about $1 billion will house e-mails, blogs, videos, documents and all the features that Google provides. One doesn't need to get surprised by Google's expansion seeing it's exhorbitant growth rate. The project will give India, the world outsourcing capital a cutting edge in it's already 'go-tech' drive. It will also give faster access to Google's services.

It's a NO BRAINER that competitors like Microsoft and Yahoo! will soon follow the suit. After all it's a win-win for India and techcorps!
